Cabramatta is a suburb of Sydney, Australia, located 30 kilometres, or 18 miles southwest of the Central Business District. Only around 30 percent of the 20 thousand residents of Cabramatta were born in Australia. It is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Australia.

The largest percentage of residents are Vietnamese, followed by Chinese, Thais, Cambodians and many other nationalities.

In the late 80’s and 90’s, Cabramatta was a hotbed for crime. Heroin was rife throughout the suburb. Cabramatta Railway station was known as the ‘junkie express,' with users pouring in from all over, looking for their fix.

And where there is a huge drug problem, there is a crime. Violent gangs, home invasions, robberies, bashings, extortions, kidnappings, and murder…

Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, situated between Australia and New Zealand. A place of spectacular scenery and peaceful beauty. The total area of the Island is 34 kilometers squared. Or 13 miles squared.

With a population of around 2000 people, Norfolk Island is a tight-knit community with a unique and complex web of friendships and relationships.

It was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1774, and it was first used as a jail for the worst convicts from the Australian colony. The Island is a self-governing territory of Australia with its own laws, including strict customs and immigration regulations.

Tourists from all over the world flock to Norfolk Island for its unique history and its reputation for being a paradise.

It was considered a safe and friendly place. Somebody was always willing to give you a helping hand, and doors and windows were left unlocked at night. Violent crime almost didn’t exist. There hadn’t been a murder on Norfolk Island since 1893…

[Part 2 of 3]

West Yorkshire is a county in England that has a population of over 2 million people. It covers an area of over 2,000 km² and is formed by five cities: Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees, and Calderdale. Each one of these cities has its own history, its own identity, and its own voice.

But during the 1970’s, they were all united. The residents of each city were looking over their shoulders, praying they wouldn’t be the next victim, in one man’s reign of terror who the press named, “The Yorkshire Ripper.”

We left part one with sex workers being warned to take care, to not stand alone and to not take lifts from people they didn’t know.

Unfortunately, many women couldn’t afford to take this advice, and the Ripper would kill again…

The Polish press called it “The perfect murder.”

“One of the most unconventional police investigations ever conducted.”

It was 9:30 am, November 13th, the year 2000. A male caller phoned an advertising company in the city of Wroclaw, Poland.

Wroclaw is the 4th largest city in Poland and has a population of about 635 thousand people. At different times throughout history, Wroclaw has been part of Bohemia, Hungary, The Austrian Empire, Prussia, and Germany. It became part of Poland in 1945 as a result of border changes after the 2nd World War.

The male caller wanted to speak to the owner of the advertising company, Dariusz Janiszewski. He needed three advertising signs made up, and he needed it done urgently.

But it was Dariusz’s mother who answered the call. When she asked further questions about the job, the caller refused to speak to her any further. He demanded to talk to Dariusz.

Dariusz wasn’t in the office, and so his mother gave the caller his cell phone number. She didn’t recognize the caller's voice, and he didn’t leave a name, although she thought he sounded professional.

Dariusz returned to the office later that day. He mentioned that he had been contacted by the male caller about the urgent job and he had arranged to meet with him later that afternoon.

At 4:00 pm Dariusz left the office to meet with the caller. He left his car in the parking lot, which his family said was unusual, as he usually took his car when meeting with customers away from the office.

Dariusz never returned for his car, and he never made it home to his wife.

What followed was one of the most unconventional police investigations ever conducted...

Sian was a bubbly, friendly, caring and loving girl, instantly likeable, beautiful and considerate. On the evening of the 18th of March 2011, Sian had a night out with some friends in the Old Town area of Swindon. They went out for dinner, before visiting two bars, ‘The Spot’ and ‘Baker Street,' after which they went to Suju nightclub.

At 2:53 am on the 19th of March, Sian was captured on security footage leaving Suju nightclub alone. She shared a flat with her boyfriend, Kevin about 800 meters away from the club. Sian never made it home.

Father John Day was a Catholic priest who graduated from Corpus Christi College in Melbourne in 1927. Corpus Christi is one of Australia’s leading priesthood training colleges. Day was given his first parish in 1936 at Colac. He transferred to numerous parishes around Victoria, before being sent to Apollo Bay, a coastal town in Southern Victoria.

It was during his two years at Apollo Bay that Day first met police officer Denis Ryan. Denis Ryan joined the Victorian police force in 1952. He had a strong Catholic faith and was a regular church goer with his family.

Out of the academy, he was sent to Russell Street police headquarters where he did various duties and learned the ropes of policing. All new recruits were sent to Russell Street at the time. After finishing up at Russell Street, Denis cut his teeth working on patrol in St Kilda, only 8 kilometers outside of Melbourne’s central business district. It was 1956. St Kilda was known as the red light district area of Melbourne at the time.

Denis had been a police officer for four years. Father John Day had been a Catholic priest for 29 years. Day was in charge of the Apollo Bay Parish but had found his way into St Kilda for the night, about a 2 hour and 40-minute drive away from home…

The 1950s was the decade that saw the birth of the suburban dream in Australia. It was a time where employment levels were extremely high and there was a very good standard of living across the country.

The economy was booming, which is what made it so attractive for hundreds of thousands of people to migrate here after World War II. The Holmes family was one of many who moved to Australia from England after the war. They came here to escape the destruction, to a place they thought would be much safer and would offer a better quality of life.

NOTE: The interviews played in this episode are a re-enactment of actual transcripts. Detective Whalen played by Sam McCool. William Birtle played by Craig Forest.

Ten years before the Claremont serial killings, the disappearance of four women from around Perth, some from the same Highway the Claremont victims were abducted from, hardly raise any media attention. It was thought they were probably just runaways. There was no task force, no press conferences, no posters or billboards and no rewards.

The city of Perth is the capital of Western Australia. It is one of the most remote cities in the world. Adelaide is the closest city, which is a 3-hour flight away.

Claremont is an upmarket, ritzy suburb of Perth. It is a place of trendy bars, nightclubs and cafes. A popular place with the young crowd. A place where you went to have fun. People would tell you that nothing bad could ever happen in Claremont. That all changed on Friday the 26th of January, 1996.

The eastern side of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is closed in by mountains. On the city’s west side, a mesa rises out of the Rio Grande Valley.

In 2005, subdivisions and new housing were being built along the West Mesa. The construction pressed up against the vast desert that stretches beyond where you will find tumbleweeds, high tension wires and trash. It is a desolate isolated spot.

In 2008 the economy crashed and the new homes stopped being built. It was on a 92-acre lot of land on the West Mesa one year later where a serial killer’s burial ground was found.

Vancouver Island. Known for its breathtaking scenery, astonishing postcard beauty and amazing wildlife. Heaven on earth. But on certain parts of the island, beneath the beauty, some will tell you there lies a dark underbelly. And in the early hours of the morning, June 30th, 2002, that underbelly came to the surface.

“If any bastard ever thought about going to the cops about us, they’ll be killed and so will their fucking families. And if we don’t get them, our mates will. It would be a shame if anything happened to your sweet little Prue, wouldn’t it”.

Those words were allegedly said by one of the men convicted for the Russell Street Bombing that we covered in the last episode. The person he said those words to? Paul Hetzel. The man who was arrested turned crown witness and whose evidence was instrumental in the conviction of the Russell Street bombers…

We left part one just after the government announced a 500 thousand dollar reward for any information to help solve the case. It was hoped this large reward would be enough to entice a male caller to make contact again.

He had already called numerous times before, claiming to know who the bombers were. Police weren't sure if he was making it up or if he really did know something, but they needed to find out either way. Did the lure of the big reward work?
